Level 4 vs Level 5 GIB Stopping: Which Finish Does Your Auckland Home Need?

Quick answer: Level 4 vs Level 5 finish comes down to what is going on the wall, not what you are willing to spend. Level 4 is the default for GIB linings under flat and low sheen paint. Level 5 is specified for semi-gloss, dark colours, or critical lighting.

Most Auckland homeowners meet the phrase “level of finish” for the first time when the walls are already lined and something looks wrong. The joints show as faint bands across a hallway in the late afternoon. A dark feature wall in the lounge reads as a patchwork the moment the sun drops low. The painter says it is a stopping problem, the stopper says it is a painting problem, and nobody wrote anything down at the start.

That argument is avoidable, and the fix costs nothing at the right moment. Levels of finish are a set of guidelines in AS/NZS 2589:2017 Gypsum linings: application and finishing for specifying the quality of a plasterboard surface before any paint goes on. Three levels apply to a normal house. Which one you need is decided by your paint sheen, your colour, and the way light hits the wall. Not by budget, and not by how good your stopper is.

This page is about the specification, not the price. It covers what each level actually requires, what forces you up to Level 5, what Level 5 involves on site, and what a painter can and cannot rescue afterwards. What Level 3, Level 4 and Level 5 Actually Mean

Start with the thing almost every argument about wall finish ignores. No sheet lining material has a surface that is perfectly flat and totally free of minor imperfections. That is the GIB Site Guide‘s own opening position, and it is worth reading twice. The goal is never a physically flat wall. The goal is the appearance of blemish-free flatness under the light and paint that room will actually have.

Levels of finish are how the industry specifies that. Winstone Wallboards bases its GIB guidance directly on AS/NZS 2589:2017, and three levels are defined for the plasterboard surface prior to decoration.

Level 3: not for anything you will look at

Level 3 must be used in areas that do not require decoration. Above ceiling level, inside service shafts, that sort of space. All joints and interior angles get tape embedded in compound plus one separate coat over joints and fastener heads, finished smooth. Tapered edge joints come out at 170mm minimum width, butt joints at 340mm.

Level 3 is not a cheap version of Level 4 for a room you plan to paint. The Site Guide flags it plainly: a Level 3 surface may not be suitable for later decoration to a high standard, and upgrading means going back and meeting the Level 4 or Level 5 requirements properly.

Level 4: the default, and what it honestly delivers

Level 4 is the default level of finish for gypsum linings unless something else is specified. If nobody wrote a level into your build contract or your renovation scope, Level 4 is what you have been quoted, whether or not the word appeared.

The requirement: tape embedded in jointing compound plus a minimum of two separate coats over all joints, angles, fastener heads and accessories, finished evenly and free of tool marks and ridges. Tapered edge joints reach 250mm minimum total width, butt joints 500mm. Joint build-up is capped at 2mm across the entire width as an even curve, with no distinct peak or ridge, and the joint should not sit hollow either. External angles must be plumb and straight, 250mm minimum width, 3mm maximum build-up over an even taper. Internal angles: 100mm minimum, 2mm maximum.

The Site Guide is also direct about the limit. Flat or low sheen paints must be used at this level, and under critical lighting conditions surface imperfections may still be apparent in a Level 4 finish. Not a defect. The specification working exactly as written.

Dulux Trade’s technical advice on levels of finish puts the realistic expectation for Level 4 in useful words: a level surface with no visible joints, and a serviceable and uniform decorative finish. Not a mirror. A wall that looks right in ordinary light.

Level 5: parity of texture and porosity

Level 5 is for use where gloss or semi-gloss paints are specified, or where critical lighting conditions occur on flat or low sheen paints. The Site Guide describes it as characterised by a parity of texture and porosity, with the surface texture random and monolithic so that joints and fixing points disappear into the field of the board.

Everything in Level 4 still applies. On top of it, a paint or plaster material is sprayed, rolled or trowelled over the whole defined area. And GIB adds two honest caveats: Level 5 is difficult to achieve and always requires co-operation between the framer, the plasterboard installer, the plasterer and the painter, and some minor imperfections may still be visible even in a good Level 5.

🎨 Painting tip: the joint widths above are the fastest sanity check a homeowner can run. A tapered joint feathered out to roughly the width of a broadsheet page is Level 4 territory. A 170mm band is Level 3, and it will show under low sheen paint in a living room.

One more framing point before the detail. These are guidelines for specifying finish quality ahead of decoration. They are not a Building Code requirement, and Level 5 is not mandated anywhere. Nobody is going to fail an inspection over a Level 4 wall. The consequence of getting it wrong is aesthetic, and it lands entirely on you, once the furniture is back in.


Paint Sheen, Colour and Light Decide Your Finish Level

Here is the part that gets skipped. The GIB Site Guide contains a Levels of Finish Selection Chart, and it is designed to be read backwards: you start with the final decoration and it tells you the level you need. Most conversations run the other way round, starting with a stopping quote and hoping the paint suits it.

The chart, in plain language

Working from the decoration to the level:

  • Wallpaper, wall covering or texture: Level 3 or Level 4, critical lighting or not.
  • Flat, matt, satin or low sheen paint in pastel or mild tones, non-critical lighting: Level 4.
  • Flat or low sheen paint in pastel or mild tones, critical lighting: Level 5.
  • Dark tones: Level 5.
  • Semi-gloss or gloss paint, critical or non-critical lighting: Level 5.

Read that dark tones line again, because it is the one that catches people. Resene’s specifier material on plasterboard levels of finish spells it out: Level 5 is also for dark colours in both non-critical and critical lighting conditions. A deep charcoal or a near-black in a low sheen, in an ordinary room with ordinary windows, still points at Level 5.

Dark, moody interiors have been the strongest colour trend in Auckland homes for several years now. A charcoal lounge, a forest green dining room, an inky bedroom feature wall. Every one of those sits in the Level 5 row of the chart, and almost none of them are being stopped to Level 5, because the colour gets chosen months after the linings go on.

What critical lighting actually is

Critical lighting is not a vague description of a bright room. It is light striking the surface at a shallow angle, close to parallel with the wall, which exaggerates every irregularity. Non-critical lighting is light that is diffused, or that arrives at roughly right angles to the surface, where the same irregularities go quiet.

In an Auckland home the usual offenders are predictable once you know to look:

  • A window at the very end of a long hallway, throwing light straight down the wall face.
  • Low winter sun through a west-facing slider, raking across a lounge wall from about 4pm.
  • Skylights and high-stud entries in newer North Shore and Hobsonville builds, where light comes down the wall rather than into the room.
  • Wall washer lights and up-lighting, which are designed to graze a surface.
  • Narrow windows sitting hard against the end of a wall, or glazing running right up to the ceiling line.

GIB’s list for minimising critical lighting is worth having in front of you at design stage, because most of it is free at that point and impossible later. Fix sheets horizontally rather than vertically so glancing light runs along the joint instead of across it. Recessed downlights and shades channel light downwards instead of along the surface. Spot lights and wall-mounted up-lights need care about where they are aimed. And windows do a lot of the damage: a narrow one sitting hard against the end of a long wall is worth widening and shifting away from the corner, glazing that runs right up to the ceiling line is worth avoiding, and a sunshade or a recessed reveal will stop direct sun reaching the wall face at all.

Sheen and colour work the same lever from the paint side

The Site Guide splits the paint variables into two lists, and they are the mirror image of each other. Factors that disguise surface imperfections: matt or low sheen paints, application by roller (which imparts a soft orange peel that diffuses light), and lighter colour selections. Factors that accentuate them: semi-gloss and gloss paints, a smooth surface finish from spray application or a smooth-finish roller sleeve, and darker colour selections.

That is why sheen and stopping level are the same decision approached from opposite ends. 🎨 Painting tip: if you are set on a dark low-sheen wall and the linings are already at Level 4, the cheapest genuine fix is often to move the colour. Put the dark tone on the wall that faces the window rather than the one the light rakes across, and the same paint on the same stopping will read completely differently.

Worth being blunt about what this is not. GIB lists three complaints that arrive as paint problems and are nothing of the sort: a Level 4 finish in a critical light environment showing joints as a textural difference between paper and plaster, dark colours on Level 4 showing jointing, and smooth finishes that accentuate imperfections and cannot be touched up easily. All three are specification outcomes, decided long before anyone opened a paint tin.


What a Level 5 GIB Stopping Finish Actually Involves on Site

If Level 5 were only a skim coat, it would be a simple upgrade you could buy at any point. It is not, and this is where most of the misunderstanding lives.

It starts at the framing, not the stopping

The framing tolerance tightens. For Level 3 and Level 4, 90% of measured points must deviate less than 4mm from an 1800mm straight edge laid along or across adjacent framing members, with the remaining 10% no more than 5mm. For Level 5, that becomes 90% under 3mm and 10% no more than 4mm.

A millimetre sounds like nothing. Across a 4.8 metre lounge wall with light grazing it, a millimetre of frame bow is a visible undulation that no amount of compound will hide, because compound follows the frame. This is why the framer has to know before the frame is stood, and why Level 5 cannot be bought after the linings are on.

Timber moisture content is the quiet companion to that. GIB specifies 18% or less at the time of lining, and notes that NZS 3602 recommends a lower content in the 8% to 18% range where heat pumps, air conditioning or central heating are going in. In Auckland, where almost every renovation now includes a heat pump, framing lined wet and then dried by a heat pump is a reliable way to produce movement behind a wall that was finished perfectly.

Back blocking: the requirement that quietly separates the levels

Back blocking means laminating a piece of plasterboard, at least 300mm wide, to the back of a joint so the joint is supported off the framing rather than bridging between members. It is the single biggest structural difference between Level 4 and Level 5 stopping.

At Level 4, back blocking is required for tapered edge joints in ceilings where there are three or more sheet edge joints on timber battens, or six on metal battens, and is not required in ceiling suspension systems. Sheet end butt joints in walls can be made on framing or back blocked between studs. At Level 5, all joints must be back blocked, walls and ceilings, without exception.

Related layout rules apply at every level and are worth checking on a renovation, because they are easy to get wrong when you are patching into existing linings. Sheets are set out to minimise joints, which usually means fixing wall sheets horizontally. Vertical joints must not coincide with the vertical edge of a door or window, and where a joint has to be made in that area it goes above the opening, no closer than 200mm to the edge. Control joints sit at a maximum of 12 metre centres in either direction.

The skim coat, and what it is actually for

Here is the correction that changes how you read every quote. The full skim coat in a Level 5 is not there to flatten the wall. GIB is explicit that its purpose is to remove the differential porosity between the stopped joints and the board face paper. Compound and paper drink sealer at different rates, so on a Level 4 wall the joints can read as dull or shiny bands through the topcoat even when the surface is perfectly flat. The skim gives the whole wall one porosity and one texture.

Mechanically, a trowel-applied skim is roughly 0.25mm to 0.50mm of GIB air drying compound over the entire board surface, left to dry completely, then sanded with 220 grit or finer in one direction using a pole sander or sanding block, dusted off, and sealed with an acrylic wallboard sealer before decoration.

A skim coat alone does not make it Level 5

This is stated in as many words by both major paint suppliers and by GIB, and it is still the most common thing homeowners are told wrongly. Resene’s specifier deck puts it in one line: a skim coat alone does not take Level 4 to Level 5. Dulux Trade says the same from the other direction, that a Level 4 finish that has been skim coated is not equivalent to a Level 5 finish, because none of the discussion or co-operation between designer, builder, framer, plasterer and painter happened along the way.

The high-build surfacer products get the same treatment. GIB rates them highly for what they do: improving surface condition, equalising porosity across board and stopping compound, and offering surfacer, sealer and ceiling finish in one application, which is why they are popular on group housing and apartment projects. Then the note. They do not improve Level 4 framing, fixing and stopping to a Level 5 finish. The honest way to describe the result is a “Level 4 plus” finish.

Even the board can be a Level 4 plus product rather than a level upgrade. GIB Ultraline has a surface coating on the paper that resists sanding damage far better than conventional paper, which is why it carries that description, and it is a genuinely good choice where a smooth finish matters. It is still not Level 5.

Important note: if someone offers to “make it Level 5” by spraying a surfacer over finished Level 4 linings, they are offering a real improvement under a wrong name. Ask for it in writing as a full-surface skim or surfacer coat over a Level 4 finish. You will get a better wall, and no one will be arguing about a specification nobody met.

Which is why the decision belongs at design stage

Dulux Trade’s position is worth quoting almost directly: the level of finish is a predetermined outcome that is specified and engineered, not an eventual appearance left to chance, and the decision should be determined at design stage. Leaving it until the decoration stage, after installation and finishing are complete, may not produce the desired outcome.

By the time a painter is on site, the framing tolerance and the back blocking are both locked. What is left to decide is how the paint is applied and what it is going over, which matters, and is the next section.


What Paint Can Rescue, and What It Cannot

Painters get handed the consequences of decisions made months earlier, so it is fair to be precise about the levers that remain. Some of them are significant.

Application method is a real variable

Where a paint system is applied by airless spray, GIB treats back rolling as essential rather than optional: the final coat is back rolled with a fine nap roller to create a soft orange peel effect that helps disguise plasterboard jointing and minor surface imperfections. A smooth sprayed surface with no back roll accentuates everything underneath it.

That single choice can be the difference between joints you notice and joints you do not, on identical stopping. Dulux Trade recommends professional rollers with an 11mm nap for the topcoat work, and either brush and roller for traditional application or spray and back rolling where speed matters on new construction.

The sealer is doing more than you think

The prep coat’s job is not just adhesion. It evens out porosity, reduces the suction difference between compound and paper, and cuts the chance of gloss banding through the topcoats. That is the same problem the Level 5 skim solves, approached with a can instead of a trowel, which is why the sealer step is not one to shorten on a Level 4 wall.

Dulux Trade puts a three coat system as the minimum needed to get the result a Level 5 finish was paid for, in line with AS/NZS 2311, the guide to the painting of buildings: one prep coat followed by two topcoats. Its process notes add a step most jobs skip, which is letting the prep coat dry fully, then lightly de-nib sanding it with ultra-fine paper and dusting down before the first topcoat. Not letting the sealer dry properly is a direct cause of sheen variation later.

Drying matters more than any of it. GIB warns that paint applied over plaster compounds that have not fully dried through can lead to poor adhesion of the sealer, or complete failure of the compound’s adhesion. On a winter job in Auckland, where indoor humidity sits high and a room can feel dry while a 500mm butt joint is still holding moisture, that is a genuine risk rather than a theoretical one.

The Auckland humidity angle nobody mentions

Compound hardness is temperature dependent, and it changes how a wall sands. The warmer the weather, the harder a given compound cures and the harder it is to sand. The colder it is, the softer the same product stays. GIB developed the GIB Trade Finish range specifically so that products with similar trowelling behaviour but different sanding characteristics are available across the seasons, with harder-to-sand products used in winter and the easiest-sanding products used in warm weather.

Damp conditions add their own problem. GIB notes that in foggy or damp weather the board surface absorbs moisture and is far more likely to scuff badly when sanded. That matters because scuffed paper is one of the few defects paint genuinely cannot cover. Where the paper surface is sanded excessively, the furry quality of it shows as a different texture through the painted surface, creating a visible difference in sheen. The remedy is to heat the room or use worn discs, not to sand harder.

🎨 Painting tip: on a June or July interior in Auckland, get the heating on in the room a day or two before the stopper’s final sand, not the morning the painter arrives. It changes how the compound sands and how quickly it is genuinely dry through, and both of those show up in the finished wall.

The honest list of what paint cannot fix

Four things survive any paint system, and it is better to hear them before the quote than after the second coat:

  • Framing deviation. Compound follows the frame. An undulation in the wall plane stays an undulation.
  • Joint peaking. A joint built above the 2mm limit, or built to a distinct ridge rather than an even curve, will catch light no matter what goes over it.
  • Over-sanded, scuffed paper. As above, it reads as a sheen difference through the topcoat.
  • Gouges, pin holes, pock marks and definitive tool marks. These are stopping defects with a stopping fix.

What paint can do is meaningful: choose a lower sheen, choose a lighter or mid tone, roll rather than spray, back roll where spraying is necessary, seal properly, and let everything dry. On a well-executed Level 4 wall under normal light, that combination is usually the whole answer. Under critical light with a dark semi-gloss, it is not, and we would rather say so at quote stage. When we take on the whole scope, the stopping and the painting are quoted and sequenced together, which is what how we scope stopping and painting as one job is built around. It also removes the argument about whose defect a visible joint is, because it is ours either way. The sealer and topcoat work that goes on over new linings is priced against the level the walls were actually finished to, not against a hope.


How to Specify the Level, and How the Finish Gets Judged

The specification is only half of it. The other half is agreeing, in advance, how anyone decides whether the wall met it.

Assess it at handover from stopper to painter

GIB’s guidance is that quality is assessed at handover from the stopper to the painter, and that a coat of sealer helps highlight imperfections while the joint widths are still visible. That timing is deliberate. Once two topcoats are on, nobody can tell a stopping defect from a painting one by looking, and the argument becomes unwinnable for everyone.

A sign-off form at that handover is the single most useful piece of paperwork on an interior job. The Site Guide recommends it precisely so that complaints about decoration do not get levelled at the plasterboard finish, and complaints about the plasterboard finish do not get blamed on the paint.

The inspection protocol, from two sources that agree

Both major references set out how a finished lining is meant to be viewed, and neither involves a torch.

GIB: stand roughly two metres back, under normal lighting conditions and from normal viewing positions, not with a high powered light glancing across the surface. High intensity work lighting is explicitly not deemed suitable for a subjective visual inspection of interior surfaces. The viewing geometry in the Site Guide is taken from the MBIE Guide to tolerances, materials and workmanship in new residential construction, at around 500 lux.

Dulux Trade: inspect in normal daylight between 10am and 2pm, with no torches or artificial light, at a distance of 1.5 to 1.8 metres, at viewing angles of 90 degrees and 30 degrees. It then adds the sentence worth remembering. Viewing at more acute angles or under strong illumination is not an endorsed method and should not be imposed, and where differences are not clearly visible from 1.5 to 1.8 metres the finish is considered acceptable under AS/NZS 2311.

The practical version: a torch held flat against a wall will find fault with any finish ever built, including a genuinely good Level 5. If someone inspects your walls that way, they are not applying the standard.

What the levels were designed to do, and what they were not

The Site Guide carries a note that settles a lot of disputes. The level of finish approach was developed to optimise installed plasterboard surfaces in preparation for decoration, and not as a basis for establishing acceptance or rejection criteria for the final decorated surface. Levels describe the wall before paint. The decorated result is judged against the painting standard, AS/NZS 2311.

What to put in writing before anyone starts

Five lines in a scope cover almost every dispute we see:

  • The level, named per room or per area. A Level 5 lounge and Level 4 bedrooms is a normal, sensible scope, and far cheaper than Level 5 throughout.
  • Whether back blocking is included, and where. This is the requirement most often assumed rather than priced.
  • How the full-surface coat is applied at Level 5, trowel-applied compound or a sprayed surfacer, and who is doing it.
  • Who seals the linings, and that the compound will be dry through before it happens.
  • The handover inspection method, in one sentence: normal light, normal viewing distance, no glancing torch.

If the answer to any of that is uncertain, the fix is usually not a higher level. Where a Level 4 wall is going to meet critical lighting, Dulux suggests considering wall coverings or textured coatings instead, and GIB notes that if imperfections remain visible even under a good Level 5 in critical light, the realistic options are to avoid the critical lighting or to use a different finish altogether, such as solid polished plaster. Sometimes the right answer is a curtain, a repositioned light, or a different wall for the dark colour.

Getting the Level 4 vs Level 5 Finish Decision Right

The decision is smaller than it looks and it happens earlier than most people expect. Pick the paint sheen and the colour, check them against the selection chart, and specify the level that suits them before the framer stands a wall. Level 4 is the right answer for most rooms in most Auckland homes. Level 5 earns its cost in the specific rooms where semi-gloss, a dark tone, or raking light is going to sit on a broad flat surface.

Get it the wrong way round and no amount of paint fixes it. Get it right and a Level 4 wall in a pale low sheen will look, for the whole life of the paint, exactly like the thing everybody wanted in the first place.

Does a dark paint colour need a Level 5 finish?

Yes, and this is the point most homeowners miss. The GIB Levels of Finish Selection Chart places dark tones in the Level 5 row, and Resene's specifier material confirms Level 5 applies to dark colours in both critical and non-critical lighting conditions. Darker colours absorb rather than diffuse light, so joints, fixings and any texture difference between compound and board paper show through. A charcoal or inky feature wall over Level 4 stopping will usually reveal the jointing.

What is the purpose of the skim coat in a Level 5 finish?

It is not to flatten the wall. GIB is explicit that the full skim coat removes the differential surface porosity between the stopped joints and the board face paper. Compound and paper absorb sealer at different rates, so on a Level 4 wall the joints can read as dull or shiny bands through the topcoat even when the surface is perfectly flat. A trowel-applied skim is roughly 0.25mm to 0.50mm of air drying compound over the whole surface, sanded with 220 grit or finer.

How should a stopped wall be inspected before painting?

Assess it at handover from stopper to painter, with a coat of sealer on to highlight imperfections while joint widths are still visible. GIB's method is standing about two metres back under normal lighting from normal viewing positions, never with a high powered light glancing across the surface. Dulux Trade's version is normal daylight between 10am and 2pm at 1.5 to 1.8 metres, at 90 and 30 degree viewing angles, with no torches. A torch held flat against a wall will fail any finish ever built.

Is Level 5 required by the New Zealand Building Code?

No. Levels of finish are guidelines contained in AS/NZS 2589:2017 for specifying the quality of a plasterboard surface before decorative coatings are applied. They are not a Building Code requirement, and no level is mandated. The GIB Site Guide also notes the levels were developed to optimise linings in preparation for decoration, not as a basis for accepting or rejecting the final decorated surface. The decorated result is judged against AS/NZS 2311, the painting standard.

Can a high build surfacer paint upgrade Level 4 to Level 5?

No. GIB rates surfacer products highly for improving surface condition and equalising porosity across board and compound, which is why they are common on group housing and apartment work. The Site Guide then states directly that they do not improve Level 4 framing, fixing and stopping to a Level 5 finish, and that the result is best considered a Level 4 plus finish. GIB Ultraline board carries the same description because its paper surface resists sanding damage, not because it changes the level.

When does the level of finish need to be decided?

At design stage, before the framing goes up. Dulux Trade describes the level of finish as a predetermined outcome that is specified and engineered rather than left to chance, and warns that leaving the decision until the decoration stage may not produce the desired result. Level 5 requires tighter framing tolerances and back blocking of all joints, both of which are locked once the linings are fixed. By the time a painter arrives, only application method, sheen and colour remain adjustable.

What if the wall still shows joints after a Level 5 finish?

GIB acknowledges some minor imperfections may still be visible even in a good Level 5, and that exposing a wall to strong critical light can reveal an unexpectedly imperfect surface regardless. Its guidance is then to avoid the critical lighting or apply a different finish altogether, such as solid polished plaster. Dulux suggests wall coverings or textured coatings where a Level 4 wall will meet critical light. Repositioning a light, adding a sunshade or moving the dark colour to another wall often solves it for far less.
