How to Install Plasterboard (GIB)
If you’d rather avoid re-plastering over an old wall, fixing new plasterboard is often the easier path for a DIYer — it removes most of the wet-plastering prep and saves time. Plasterboard comes in a range of thicknesses and sizes, so check with the trade store or a local contractor on the right sheet for your wall.
Start by cutting the board to size. When fixing to a stud wall, cut to the centre of the noggin or joist. You’ll need:
- Rasp
- Straight edge
- Retractable knife
- Measuring tape
- Pencil
- Pad saw
Step 1
Measure and cut the sheets 12 mm short of the floor-to-ceiling height.
Step 2
Mark the cutting line on the ivory side of the board, then cut along it with a craft knife and straight edge.
Step 3
Turn the board over, fold along the cut to snap it, then run the knife through the paper backing.
Step 4
Get a second person to help fix the board — it’s much easier with two. Wedge a bolster chisel at the foot of the board, slide a timber off-cut underneath, and press down with your foot to force the board hard up against the ceiling. Fit it with the ivory side outwards.
Step 5
Fix with 32 mm plasterboard screws at roughly 150 mm intervals, 15 mm in from the edges. Carry on fitting whole boards the same way, cutting to fit above doorways and against adjacent walls. Notch the board around any skirting.
Step 6
Finish the joints with plasterboard tape for a smooth, crack-resistant result.

Applying the undercoat plaster
Load your hawk with two full trowels of mixed plaster. Spread it evenly and thinly — don’t lay it on too thick. Pull upwards, then work it side to side as you go, scraping excess back into the bucket. Repeat until you’ve covered the section with a smooth, even layer. After 2–3 sections the plaster starts to firm up.
Fill any narrow gaps, like the join between a doorframe and the wall, with a small tool. Once the first coat has firmed for around 20 minutes, smooth over any lumps with the trowel and work the corners, top and bottom of the wall, which are the fiddly bits. A damp brush helps even out the edges.
Scratching (devilling) the surface
Before the second coat, key the first coat so the next layer grips. The proper tool is a devilling float (a wooden float with nails set into it), but an old kitchen fork does the job at a small scale.
The second and final coat
After keying, apply a second, thinner coat. Slacken the mix with a little more water and aim for a thin layer around 2 mm. Let it firm slightly, then move to finishing.

Flatten any bumps while the plaster is still slightly wet. Once it hardens, sand back the excess and even out the surface before you paint or paper. How to Replaster an Existing Wall
Most guides to plastering assume bare framing and new sheets. That is not the job most Auckland homeowners actually have. The wall is already there, already painted, and the problem is that it has stopped looking flat: filled picture hooks, a patched-over doorway, hairline cracks along the stopped joints, or the shallow ripple left behind after wallpaper came off. Replastering an existing wall is a different exercise from stopping a new one, and the method below is the one that applies to a lived-in house.
Replaster, skim or patch: what your wall actually needs
Three jobs all get called “replastering” and they are not interchangeable. A patch is local: you cut back the damage, fill, feather the edges out past the repair and sand. A skim coat is a thin coat over the whole wall to reset the surface to one plane, which is what you want when a wall has many small defects instead of one big one. A full replaster means the existing lining is coming off, either because it is loose, water-damaged, or so far out of level that no coat is going to rescue it.
The test is simple and it takes two minutes. Turn off the room light, hold a torch flat against the wall so the beam rakes across the surface, and walk it along. Isolated shadows in one or two places means patching. Shadows scattered across the whole wall, or old repairs showing as low spots wherever a previous owner has filled something, means skimming. How to skim coat a painted wall
The instinct is to reach for stopping compound and trowel it over the paint. It will stick, but the finish is only as flat as your trowel work, and a hand skim across a whole wall is the hardest thing on this page to do well. There is a roller-applied route that is far more forgiving, and it is what a lot of Auckland stoppers now use on repaint jobs.
Resene Broadwall Surface Prep & Seal is made for roller application, and its data sheet lists among its performance points that it will “upgrade level of finish of existing painted walls” as well as achieve a level 5 finish on paperfaced plasterboard. It is sandable, its minimum recoat time is 6 hours, and its theoretical coverage is 4 square metres per litre at 110 microns. That is a much heavier film than a normal sealer, which is exactly why it fills. Read those coverage figures before you buy anything. At 4 square metres per litre, a single 12 square metre wall is roughly 3 litres per coat, so a whole room is a very different shopping list from a normal repaint. That number is the one people get wrong, and it is why a “quick skim” turns into two trips to the trade counter.
The sequence on a painted wall runs: wash off grease and dust and let it dry, sand the whole surface so it is keyed and any proud filler is flat, fill and let the fills go off properly, then apply the surfacer with a roller and lay it off. Sand between coats rather than trying to build thickness in one pass. Check under raking light again before you prime, because a surfacer flattens a wall beautifully and will still hold a ridge you rolled in and did not see.

Filling holes and cracks before you skim
Fill first, coat second. Anything you leave will telegraph through, because a skim coat is too thin to bridge it.
Screw holes and picture hooks take a single pass of lightweight filler, sanded flush once dry. Anything wider than a finger needs backing: cut the hole square, fit an offcut of plasterboard behind it or a patch panel into the opening, tape the perimeter with paper tape and compound, then build up in two or three thin coats, never one thick one. Thick fills shrink, and a shrunken fill under a fresh skim leaves a visible dish exactly where you were trying to hide something.
Hairline cracks along a stopped joint are usually movement rather than a failed joint. Rake the crack open slightly, tape it with paper tape bedded in compound, then coat over it. Filler alone on a live joint comes back within a year. Cracks that run diagonally from the corner of a door or window opening, that keep reopening after repair, or that arrive alongside sticking doors or moving floors are a structural question before they are a plastering one, and they need a builder’s eye before anyone starts coating them.
Villa walls: fibrous plaster, scrim and lath
Pre-1940s Auckland homes are the exception to almost everything above. Instead of GIB you are likely to find fibrous plaster sheets, or older lath and plaster with hessian scrim over the joints and paper over the scrim. Both behave differently from modern plasterboard: they are more brittle around old fixings, they are far more absorbent, and old repairs tend to sit proud rather than flush.
There are two practical consequences. The surface drinks product, so a sealer coat ahead of any surfacer is not optional on old plaster, and the coverage you get will be worse than the data sheet figure. And scrimmed joints move seasonally, so skimming over an open scrim joint without taping it first simply gives the crack a fresh surface to reappear through. Important note: Older Auckland homes can carry lead-based paint, and older linings and textured ceilings can contain asbestos. Sanding either one dry is the wrong way to find out. If the house is old and you are about to sand a whole wall back, have the surface tested before you start rather than assuming it is clear.

Sometimes the cheapest path is to stop trying to save the lining. If the wall is out of level by more than a skim can absorb, if the board is water-damaged, or if you would be chasing a dead-flat result across a whole room by hand, sheeting over or replacing the lining is usually faster and lands flatter. The other honest limit is the finish standard. A skim that reads fine in a hallway will not survive a long north-facing wall in a modern open-plan living room, where low-angle afternoon light does the same job as your torch test. That is where the difference between a level 4 and a level 5 stopping finish stops being jargon and starts being the reason a repaint looks considered or looks rushed.
